Therapy (also called counseling or psychotherapy) is a safe, confidential space where you can explore and address tough thoughts, feelings, or challenges in your life. It’s a one-on-one process with a licensed mental health professional, designed to help you heal, grow, and find balance. Therapy can also happen in a group setting, called “group therapy,” where individuals come together to share and support one another.
Choosing the right therapist is a lot like finding the right friend or trusted professional—you’ll know when it feels right. Look for someone you connect with, respect, and feel comfortable opening up to. Check their qualifications and make sure they specialize in the areas you need support with. Don’t hesitate to ask questions during an initial consultation to see if they’re a good fit for you. Your comfort and trust are key to a successful therapeutic relationship.
Just show up—we’ll take it from there! Your sessions can flow naturally with your therapist guiding the process, or you can bring specific topics or concerns you’d like to explore. Early sessions will focus on building a connection and getting comfortable. You’ll always be in control of how much you share, and while your therapist may encourage you to step outside your comfort zone, it’s always an invitation—not a requirement. Therapy is your space, at your pace.
What if therapy doesn’t work out—can I quit anytime
Absolutely! If therapy doesn’t feel like the right fit, you’re free to stop anytime. You might explore other therapists, approaches, or even group therapy. That said, we encourage you to commit to a few sessions before making a decision. Like many new experiences, therapy can take a little time to feel comfortable. Who knows—you might end up loving it after giving it a chance!
How much does therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance
Therapy is often covered by insurance, and you might only need to pay a copay. In some cases, you may pay out of pocket and request reimbursement from your insurance. Don’t worry—we’ll check your benefits and confirm everything before your first session, so there are no surprises.
If you prefer self-pay or don’t have insurance, that’s always an option. For military or military-affiliated individuals, there are programs that offer free therapy. Send us an email to learn more!
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, but preparation makes it easier!
For Zoom sessions: Find a private, comfortable, and well-lit space with a strong Wi-Fi connection. Prop your device on something sturdy to keep your hands free. If you’re new to Zoom, set up your account and test the app beforehand. Have water, snacks, and anything you need nearby, and take care of any distractions (like using the restroom) beforehand.
For in-person sessions: Arrive on time, dress comfortably, and silence your phone. Bring water if you’d like, and most importantly, show up as your authentic self.
